Iran's Rouhani congratulates South Korea's Moon on presidential victory

Lee's appointment requires parliamentary approval.

Moon Jae-in, who easily won South Korea's presidential election Tuesday, was the beneficiary of another popular backlash against a ruling establishment perceived as corrupt and out of touch. 'If needed, I will fly straight to Washington.

Beijing also has its own issues with Seoul.

In his inaugural address Wednesday, South Korea's president said he would consider visiting Pyongyang under the right conditions. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told the United Nations the US wants to bring North Korea to "its senses, not to its knees", according to the Newsweek report.

While the USA claims the system - Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, or THAAD - is necessary to protect Seoul from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Beijing views the deployment as going far beyond defending the south from the DPRK, instead boosting US capabilities for looking deep into Chinese territory and blunting China's "second-strike" capability in case of a nuclear confrontation with the U.S.

"South Korea's trade volume with China is bigger than its volume with the USA and Japan combined". Moon agreed, the official said.

Moon met leaders of opposition parties before his simple swearing-in ceremony at parliament and promised to coordinate with them on national security.

The shift came one day after a congratulatory conversation from Xi to Moon Jae-in, the South Korea's newly minted president on Thursday.

Moon waved to well-wishers through the sunroof of his limousine, which was flanked by police motorbikes.

Trump trade officials prefer tri-lateral NAFTA deal: US senators
Jerry Moran of Kansas is working to help preserve the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). On May 11, the Senate confirmed Robert Lighthizer to serve as the new U.S.

Presidents Moon and Xi began their conversation at around noon and spoke for about 40 minutes.

"For a long time, China has upheld the goal of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, protecting the peace and stability of the peninsula and resolving the problem via dialogue and consultation", Xi said.

Moon explained the difficulties faced by South Korean companies that are doing business in China and asked for Xi's "special attention" to ease those concerns, Yoon said.

The decision by the ousted Park's government to host the THAAD system has already proved a headache for Moon as Seoul tries to walk a fine line between Washington, its closest security ally, and Beijing.

"I want to say it sternly".

He also told President Xi that the controversy over THAAD could be resolved much more efficiently if North Korea would stop its missile tests, the latest of which occured less than two weeks ago.

Since the beginning of previous year the North - which says it needs atomic weapons to defend itself against invasion - has mounted two nuclear tests and a series of missile launches.

Moon advocated a two-track approach of pressure and sanctions toward North Korea to resolve the country's nuclear issue in a comprehensive, staged way. It has also been working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the United States, presenting Trump with perhaps his most pressing security issue. On Thursday, the USA director of National Intelligence, Dan Coats, told the Senate Intelligence Committee that North Korea posed "a very significant, potentially existential threat to the United States that has to be addressed". Still, Moon stressed that the matter shouldn't remain a sticking point for the two nations to pursue "future-oriented relations", Yoon said in a separate briefing.
