AT&T workers start 3-day strike in contract impasse

AT&T workers went on strike Friday in Philadelphia and other cities in Pennsylvania to protest the company's failure to negotiate in good faith a new contract.

Union officials say there are 50-60 CWA members at AT&T stores in Maine. For store workers, sales commissions are also a hot issue. Our message is clear: fair contract or strike.

The strike comes at a hard time for AT&T's wireless business, which has faced intense pressure since the start of the year from aggressive competitors and apathetic customers.

The CWA was involved in a 45-day strike past year by 40,000 Verizon wireline workers that ended in June. AT&T said the stoppage is slated to end at midnight Sunday.

CWA Local 2006 represents local communications workers with AT&T.

Giga added that the strike involves less than 14 percent of AT&T's employees.

"This is the largest walkout in the US since Verizon workers went on strike a year ago". The company and the union have held contract negotiations for almost four months of bargaining, according to the statement, which said workers are fighting for wage increases to cover rising healthcare costs, basic job security, affordable healthcare, and a fair scheduling policy.

With over 200,000 employees in the U.S, AT&T is the country's largest telecom company.

"We've been bargaining with AT&T for over a year", CWA president Chris Shelton told the rally in Silicon Valley.

"We're walking off the job today because AT&T has every means available to support its core workforce and the customers who help make them $1 billion a month in profits, but chooses to undercut us at every turn", said James Stiffey, an AT&T wireless worker from Pittsburgh. We're fighting for job security, that's the biggest thing.

The union estimates that AT&T has cut 12,000 call-center jobs in the United States since 2011 while creating many such jobs overseas, but Mr.

"This may be the largest retail strike in USA history".

Just over half of the employees work for the company's wireless business, primarily in call centers and retail stores, and have been without a long-term contract since February. Workers are expected to go back to work on Monday.
