Tennessee teacher planned to take 15-year-old girl to Mexico

Tad Cummins, 50, was captured last week after allegedly spending more than five weeks on the run with 15-year-old Elizabeth Thomas, his student at the Culleoka Unit School in Maury County, Tennessee.

Cummins is charged with transportation of a minor across state lines for the goal of criminal sexual intercourse.

Former teacher and alleged kidnapper Tad Cummins waived extradition today during a court hearing in Sacramento, California.

Tad Cummins, 50, allegedly altered his appearance, switched license plates twice, disabled the car's Global Positioning System and used various aliases for him and the teen, documents state.

As part of his "audacious scheme", Cummins also used a small watercraft to conduct "a test run" for their trip to Mexico, according to the documents.

A Tennessee high school teacher, charged with taking a student to a California commune to continue a sexual relationship, had his initial appearance in a Sacramento federal courtroom Monday.

Cummins denied kissing the girl when detectives questioned him the next day. "He's done this awful thing that he has to pay for, but he's still my brother and I love him", she said.

She has returned to Tennessee and is in a "safe location with family and friends where she is comfortable and resting", said attorney Jason Whatley, who is representing the Thomas family.
