Iranian vessel approached US Navy destroyer in the Persian Gulf

In that incident, the United States tried to instruct the Iranian vessels to stop by radio but they did not respond, which forced the USS Mahan to fire 3 warning shots.

The comment comes in the wake of the reports by USA media that said that the USS Mahan had to switch on the danger signal and change its course after having a close encounter with the Iranian military ship. The USS Mahan attempted to turn the Iranian ship away be issuing verbal warnings, but those efforts went unheeded by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Navy Corps.

Iranian authorities did not immediately report the incident.

A US guided-missile destroyer fired a warning flare toward an Iranian Revolutionary Guard vessel in the Persian Gulf this week, a Navy official said.

"CENTCOM explained the Iranian vessel came within 1,100 yards of the Mahan and was "closing the distance despite the Mahan maneuvering to open the distance between the two vessels".

Federal judge issues order to block Arkansas executions
Arkansas's original packed schedule would place added pressure on the execution team, increasing the risk of error, critics say. The first two executions were slated to be carried out Monday, but it's unlikely those will happen unless the 8th U.S.

The Mahan fired no warning shots in the process; the occurrence is not unheard of on the Gulf, either.

According to the USA military, Iranian vessels instigated at least 35 "unprofessional" encounters with US naval vessels in the Persian Gulf during 2016, a 50 percent increase from 2015, Fox News reported. Military officials have told the media that the Mahan tried to communicate with the Iranians, but when they received no response, they ended up firing a flare as the Iranian ship continued to approach.

Iran has been trying to make its presence notable in the Persian Gulf over the years especially along the Strait of Hormuz.

Since the nuclear deal with world powers, the hard-line Revolutionary Guard has stepped up its encounters with the Americans. Following the incident in January, Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis explained the extent of confrontation in the Persian Gulf, saying there were "a total of 35 [incidents] in 2016 that were assessed to be unsafe and unprofessional". With Monday's event, there have been seven so far in 2017, McConnaughey said.
