Adrian Peterson & The Saints Are Closing In On A Deal

The MMQB's Peter King also reported on Monday that the Saints are leaning toward keeping all of their current draft picks, one of which is the 32nd pick that they acquired from the Patriots for receiver Brandin Cooks.

The paltry contract value sheds light on the value of aging running backs in the current free agent market - even great ones.

According to reports, Peterson was nearing a deal on Monday to sign with the New Orleans Saints.

The 32-year-old Peterson has been a free agent since the end of February when the Minnesota Vikings declined the 2017 option on his contract. Peterson ran only 37 times for 72 yards last season after tearing his meniscus in a September game.

Minnesota cut him last month rather than pay him his contracted $18 million. One has to wonder what the Saints see in adding an aging veteran in the form of Peterson. The team's leading rusher has had fewer than 160 touches in five of the last seven seasons. It won't be a situation where Peterson is seeing a heavy dose of carries.

Gillislee now will make $6.4 million over two years with the Pats. Had he not signed, the Pats would have had an exclusive negotiating window with him. It started to look as though Peterson would need to wait until after the draft to find a new home. After this year, we might have to expand that window to weeks.

- The Seattle Seahawks are unlikely now to deal away Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman.

While the Saints made a reportedly pricier lateral move, the Patriots got their easy upgrade over Blount. Although "if someone calls and goes insane with something, we'll discuss it", Schneider said.

Of the two, trading Butler appeared to be the more likely of the two scenarios. Butler, Saints had a deal in place worth more than $50M. He'd better not hold out much longer.

Malcolm Butler might be staying with the Patriots after all.

Most years, more than a dozen trades in the first round are transacted.

The running back did play 16 games in 2015, carrying the ball 327 times for 1,485 yards.

-The San Francisco 49ers are "still strongly considering" taking a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in this week's NFL Draft.

Gillislee received a fifth-round tender as a restricted free agent, and the Bills will receive the Patriots' pick in that round of the National Football League draft, No. 163 overall.

It's all smoke-and-mirrors game this week, folks.

Despite their lack of first or second-round picks, the Patriots are still preparing for any eventuality, working out possible first-round pick, offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk.
